Since the thermo-industrial revolution, our species, which appeared some 300,000 years ago, has exponentially increased its footprint on natural ecosystems through dramatic demographic and lifestyle changes. The magnitude of our impacts is so strong that it will be noticeable in millions of years, hence the advent of a possible new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. Besides, despite an increase in per capita income over time, substantial social problems remain in human societies such as hunger and poverty. In 2015, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by the United Nations to pave a sustainable future for humans and natural ecosystems. What might the roles of organisations be in such a socio-ecological transition? In the past decades, it has taken various forms, including CSR strategies or social entrepreneurship. We will examine the ins and outs of the latter, and conclude by focusing on the contributions of the digital sector to humanity’s grand challenges.
